Abstract

Abstract

Resilience may help students manage stress and use more adaptive coping strategies. Evidence on the association between resilience and cigarette smoking among nursing students in Indonesia remains limited. This study examined the association between resilience scores and current cigarette smoking among nursing students. A cross-sectional study was conducted among diploma and bachelor of nursing students at Universitas Faletehan. The initial dataset contained 182 responses. Six repeated records from five respondent identifiers were identified, and the most recent response for each identifier was retained, leaving 176 records for the primary analysis. Resilience was assessed using six items that were content-consistent with the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Negatively worded items were reverse-scored, and the resilience score was calculated as the mean of the six items. Current smoking was defined as smoking on at least one day during the previous 30 days. The analyses included the Mann–Whitney U test, point-biserial correlation, and simple logistic regression. Twenty-five of 176 respondents (14.2%) met the definition of current smoking. The mean resilience score was 3.23 ± 0.58. The median resilience score was 3.00 (IQR 2.79–3.83) among current smokers and 3.17 (IQR 3.00–3.50) among non-current smokers. The Mann–Whitney U test showed no statistically significant difference (p = .630). Point-biserial correlation was also not significant (r = .058; p = .441). Simple logistic regression yielded an OR of 1.33 (95% CI 0.64–2.76; p = .439) for each one-point increase in resilience. Internal consistency of the six-item measure was low (Cronbach’s α = .49). No statistically significant association was observed between resilience and current cigarette smoking in this nursing-student sample. The substantial sex imbalance and low internal consistency of the measure limit the precision of the findings. Future studies should use a locally validated Indonesian resilience instrument and recruit larger, more balanced samples.
